Not every near-death experience is peaceful. Some people return, describing darkness, fear and isolation, and many say it changed the direction of their lives. These accounts are hard to hear. These are shared not to frighten anyone, but because the Bible takes eternity seriously, and so should we. Jesus spoke about hell more than anyone else in Scripture, and He spoke out of love so that no one would have to go there.
What people commonly describe
• darkness, cold or emptiness
• overwhelming fear or loneliness
• a sense of being pulled downward
• frightening beings or voices
• unquenchable fire
• crying out to God or to Jesus, and being rescued
• coming back determined to change their lives
What does the Bible say?
Jesus told of a rich man who found himself in torment while Lazarus was comforted. The rich man asked for one drop of water as, "I am in agony in this fire" (Luke 16:19-31); the message of the Bible is rescue: "God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved" (Romans 10:13).

Do people see hell in near-death experiences?
Some describe experiences they understand as hell or close to it. We can't verify every detail, but they echo Jesus' warnings.
Can someone come back from hell?
These people were near death, not finally judged. Their stories are a second chance, like the prodigal son had his second chance (Luke 15:11-32).
Does a bad NDE mean someone is going to hell?
No. Many who had one turned to Jesus afterwards. No one is beyond His reach (John 6:37).
